SPIRIT Image of the Year Competition

Congratulations to Yuta Uemoto from Churchlands Senior High School with the winning image for 2019 ‘M 20’:

Submit your SPIRIT images for the chance to be displayed as part of the annual Astrofest Astrophotography Exhibition in February 2020 to thousands of visitors!

The best image of 2019 will be awarded SPIRIT Image of the Year, selected by the exhibition curator and judges. The winner will receive the SPIRIT Image of the Year trophy as well as a high quality print of their winning image.

Entries close December 13th, 2019 and the winner will be announced on the SPIRIT website in January/February 2020.

How to Enter

Submit your images via email to education@icrar.org by December 13th, 2019, including the following information:

  • Your name
  • Your school
  • Your year level
  • A title for your image
  • A caption for your image (including what SPIRIT telescope you used to create the image and any other details about processing, target etc.)
  • The highest resolution possible file of your image (if image is larger than 10MB it can be submitted using a filesharing service such as Dropbox)

Submit each entry as a separate email.

Entry Conditions

Entry is open to school students (primary and secondary) and all images submitted must be created with data captured using the SPIRIT telescopes.


The SPIRIT Image of the Year competition is supported by ASTRO 3D and ICRAR.

The winning image will be displayed as part of the Astrofest Astrophotography Exhibition on February 29th, 2020.
